I had mentioned previously that here slowly I would start walking some of you viewers through the understandings and some inner workings of goth. Although at 11 years into the trade myself I still have much to learn. This is a concept that will take a substantial amount of time to grasp. I will put it as easily as I can.
Gothic / Goth / Gothism : By definition means an assortment of people consisting of many sub - styles and genres within am alternative sub - society / type. Those whom wave between both light and dark, neither good nor evil. Those who see the darker side of life as a brighter side. Those who find homage in a paceful envirnoment of self express and alternative spiritual beliefs. A non conformist. Gothic based on the origins of pain, grief, happiness, destruction, plague, poverty, wealth, balance, self evaluation and dedicated studies of the arts.
This is how being a goth was proposed to myself. 11 years ago I did not realize it but I was catagorized in a group of "Babies"...most of which people are found twisted up in a trend that appeals to addolenscene with less than desirab;e upbringings. To a very small percentage they will carry it with them for the rest of their lives, and as they grow into there undead skin they find themselves placed under other subtypes of goth, ones in which suit their beliefs and needs. Not uncommon for one person to be weighted under several sub types. It is also not uncommon to find people who know nothing about goth rather than fashion, whom have very little to no understanding of what goth is....we refer to them as "posers".
Clothing, make up, music, persona, character and presentation plat a huge role in gothism this is what depicts and separates us from the rest of other Sub - types such as "Punks, Reifers, Mobs and Gallorians"....to name a very very short list.
Generally a goth has been stereotyped into being "satan worshippers and dressed in black" which couldnt be farther from the truth. Although black is an important color it isnt the only apparent one. The reason for black is it is a rich color representing wealth either mentally, physically, emotionally or spiritually. Back as early as the 1300's black was not a readily available fabric as the huge amounts of time it would take to dye a tartan such a deep color and the expensiveness of the procedure. As an example in acient Greece the Spartans wore a dark blue showing to their offenders the wealth they held as the darker colors were very expensive. As well as both man and woman wore charcol around there eyes showing no fear....also a rare commodity to afford charcol at that time. The spartans were amoung some of the first gothics.
As I wander in and out of the sub - genres and types of goths you will see many flucuations in change....as the goth grows older some things fade and other things expand, such as knowledge which as a whole for a goth is power.
Some things in which all goths have in common is the freedom and dignity to go about the world with out feeling the fire of judgment, they all love shock value and carry an inner passion for life....this is a true goth....if you ask and they give you this answer or something similar then they are true to who they are. Most goths have an ego that would bury a pound of gold without blinking. Confident and loyal.
There are many magicks (religions) of goth. Most goths have one or many of these belief systems. No different than a Christain being part of a certain divination. This is the part of gothism which can get quite complicated. Spirituality and practicing are huge for a goth, again waving in and out of several types are certain levels. However goth itself is a type of spirituality. Beliefs can vary from witchcraft/wiccan/paganism.....Interluding Druidry, Enochian, Choas Magick, Qabalah, Shamanism, and Thelema or even Christianity.
As mentioned there are lists of types of goths. For example: Lolitas, Gravers, Crypt Kiddies, Romantic, Victorian, White Goths, Vampyres, Vintage, Uber, Traditional, Rivetheads, Mopeys, Metal, Skimpy, Gutters, GothBilly's, Glam, Fetishists, Faery, Death rockers and Cyber Goths.
As you can see they are many and this list again could go on. Sometimes it gets quite difficult to tell the difference as an individual will submerge two or more styles into one of their own.
Although as we speak Im am regenrating my literature I will refer you to an author I have found not too long ago who so far has the ideals of goth pretty down pat and concrete. Many people dazzle themselves around the bush. This guy knows his facts and has done extensive research which I have found in his book. His book is called "Goth Craft" He has a website www.ravendigitalis.com He has some very unquie pictures and a great profile.
On another date I will collaborate and have a better thought out destination in education of the goth for you. This is kind of an overview to give ya something to thing about.
